Test Items
a. Theory Test
– 30-minute test paper on boat parts, sailing terminology, weather & tide, basic rules, safety at sea, etc.
b. Practical Test.
1. Able to rig a dinghy on land & name the parts of the boat and their functions.
2. Able to launch and return to shore in a seaman-like manner.
3. Able to sail one class of dinghy on all points of sail in wind conditions of up to 10 knots.
4. Able to perform heave-to.
5. Able to upright a capsized dinghy.
6. Knows the requirements of personal & boat safety.
7. Able to demonstrate the use of these knots: figure of 8, reef, bowline, sheet bend, clove hitch, round turn and 2 half hitches.
Terms and Conditions for Basic Sailing Course:
- Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years old (after birthday) to start and able to swim at least 50 m with a personal flotation device.
- Singapore Sailing Federation reserves the right to cancel a session due to lack of participation (Minimum 6 to start the course).
- No replacement classes will be provided for any missed sessions without a medical certificate.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Do I need to know how to swim?
A: Yes, a swim test will be conducted in the open sea. You will be equipped with a personal flotation device (will be provided).
Q: What is the duration of classes?
A: Classes will run from 0930 – 1730.
Q: When will I receive information on the meeting time and place and any clothing I should prepare?
A: The above joining details will be provided about 1 week prior to the course commencement.
Q: Will lunch be provided?
A: Yes it will. Please let us know of any specific dietary requirements you might have through the booking form (E.g. Halal, Jain, Vegan etc)
Q: Will I get a sailing certificate after the course?
A: This is dependent on whether you pass the assessment held on the last day of the course. If you pass the assessment, you will receive a Level 1 Sailing Proficiency certification.
