Basic Sailing Course (Youth & Adult)

*** Full day course (9:30am – 5:00pm) for 4 days (total of 8 sessions) ***

  • Intake 1: April 3, 4, 5 & 6
  • Intake 2: Jun 5, 6, 7 & 8

* Training dates are subject to changes
Note: * Minimum of 6 pax signed up to start the course.
             * Maximum 6 pax per Coach as we need to follow the social distancing guidelines.

Requirements: 
● Min 13 years old to 70 years old (Must be 50kg above)
● Able to swim 50m with personal floatation device
● Min 6 participants to start a class

LESSON OUTLINE

Day 1 

09.20 am : Report to NSC – proceed at the Multi Purpose Hall / Canteen

– Coaches to check the identification of students

09.30am – 10.40 am: Classroom Theory Lesson

Chapter 1 :  Introduction – Welcome, Safety Measure

Procedures (on land & water)

Chapter 2 : Basic Theory

Chapter 3 : Boat Work

10.45 am: Drawing of equipment and life jacket / helmet

11.00am- 12.45pm: Identify wind direction, Rigging / Demonstration / boat simulator

1.00pm: Lunch

2.00pm – 2.30pm: Simulation tack, steer boat, trim sail, direction, wind angle

2.45pm – 4.30pm: Swim test, Beach drill (capsize, Tacking, Launching & recovery) and  try sailing with two marks in sailing reaching. Stop-Accelerate. How to get out of no go zone

4.30pm – 5.00 pm: Wash boats, return equipment’s

5.20pm: Debrief

5.30pm: Dismiss

Day 2

10.45am- 11.30am: Drawing of equipment / Rigging / Demonstration /  boat simulator

11.30am – 12.50pm: Sailing beam reach with two marks with tacking and gybing. Stop-accelerate. Follow the leader, 5 essentials practice

1.00pm: Lunch

2.00pm – 2.15pm: Boat checking, launching

2.30pm – 5.00pm: Tacking, gybing, sailing in windward/leeward course with 3 Marks (low angle for upwind mark) stop/accelerate

5.20pm: Debrief

5.30pm: Dismiss

Day 3 

09.20am: Report to NSC

09.30am- 10.00am: Rigging and Boat Checking

10.15am – 12.45am: Launching, Triangle course with all combination of all boat handlings material, sail standing

1.00pm: Lunch

2.00pm – 2.25pm: MOB Theory Lesson

2.30pm – 5.00pm: Launching, Continue triangle course, practice MOB , Sail Long Distance (depend on situation)

5.20 pm: Debriefing

5.30 pm: Dismiss

Day 4 

09.20 am: Report to NSC

09.30am – 10.00am: Online Theory Test (handphone)

NOTE : Participants fill up the test application form, and testers to explain the criteria’s to pass the Practical Test

10.15 am: Rigging and checking boats

– Coach Testers assess the boat rigging, knots and safety. Requirements, oral test (random question)

10.45 am -12.50 pm: Launching water activity (practical sailing test)

  6. Stop (Heave-To) and Accelerate

  7. MOB

1.00 pm: Lunch

2.00 pm – 4.00 pm: Launching and continue practical test until all done

NOTE : Testers to inform admin staffs regarding all participants results to proceed with printing the Level 1 Card

4.00 pm – 5.00pm: Back to shore and wash boats, returns all equipment’s

5.00 pm: Graduation (Stick to the same group), Participants to get their certificates and cards

5.30 pm: Dismiss

What to Bring: 

    • Sun block lotion
    • Sunglasses and retention strap 
    • Rubber soled shoes (covered) or sailing booties – (no sandals)
    • Rash guard or T-shirt & swim long tights or pants (for on-water sessions)
    • Cap 
    • Helmet (e. g. bicycle / roller skate helmet)
    • A pair of sailing gloves 
    • Whistle
    • Water bottle
    • Towel
    • A set of extra clothing
    • Lunch meal
    • Snack (e.g. energy bar, banana & etc)
    • Writing materials (notebook & pen)

  • Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

  • Certificate of participation (upon completion)

To obtain Level 1 Dinghy Proficiency, participants must successfully complete the theory and practical assessments. After successful completion of the theory and practical assessment, participants can submit the application for the Level 1 Dinghy Proficiency card. 

Note: Kindly bring your meal & own snacks e.g. fruits or energy bar for your recovery food after the afternoon sailing.

Terms and Conditions for Basic Sailing Course:

  • Singapore Sailing Federation reserves the right to cancel a session due to lack of participation (Minimum 6 to start the course).
  • No replacement classes will be provided for any missed sessions without a medical certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I need to know how to swim?
A: Yes, a swim test will be conducted in the open sea. You will be equipped with a personal flotation device (will be provided).

Q: What is the duration of classes?
A: Classes will run from 0930 – 1730.

Q: When will I receive information on the meeting time and place and any clothing I should prepare?
A: The above joining details will be provided about 1 week prior to the course commencement.

Q: Will lunch be provided?
A: No, please kindly provide your own meal as we also do not have any Canteen on our place.

Q: Will I get a sailing certificate after the course?
A: This is dependent on whether you pass the assessment held on the last day of the course. If you pass the assessment, you will receive a Level 1 Sailing Proficiency certification. If you need to retake the assessment, you may click on the following link:
